Healthy gums help support your teeth, but early gum problems can be easy to overlook. Plaque left around the gumline may contribute to gingivitis and, in some people, more advanced gum disease. These habits can lower risk, although they do not replace an individual dental assessment.
1. Brush gently twice a day
Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Angle the bristles towards the gumline and use small, gentle movements rather than scrubbing hard. Clean every surface and give yourself about two minutes.
2. Clean between your teeth
A toothbrush cannot reach every contact point. Floss, interdental brushes, or another dentist-recommended aid can help remove plaque between teeth. The best option depends on the spaces between your teeth and your dexterity.
3. Arrange professional care at an interval suited to you
Hardened deposits cannot be brushed away at home. A dentist can assess your gum health and advise whether scaling and polishing is appropriate and how often you should return. Recall intervals vary according to individual risk.
4. Act on warning signs
Bleeding, persistent bad breath, swelling, tenderness, gum recession, or loose teeth deserve attention. These signs do not confirm a diagnosis on their own, but an early examination can identify the cause and available treatment.
5. Support your mouth with everyday habits
Choose a balanced diet, limit frequent sugary foods and drinks, avoid tobacco, and drink water regularly. These steps work alongside brushing and interdental cleaning rather than replacing them.
